Why recruit from overseas?

Staff Shortages

New figures from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) have revealed that despite a backdrop of economic challenge and rising costs of materials and labour, around 225,000 extra workers will be required to meet construction demand within the next four years.

The UK Government is adding building trades to the Shortage Occupations List which means employers can hire from abroad with ease, pay lower visa fees and reduced salaries to migrant workers.

Government Help

The UK is to welcome in more foreign builders to tackle a chronic post-Brexit labour shortage in the construction industry. Roles on the construction Shortage Occupations List are given concessions within the Immigration Rules, which are designed to make it easier for employers to hire migrant workers to fill those vacancies.

The skills gap

As the construction industry recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is being hit with a fresh challenge in the form of a talent shortage that sees 58% of organisations struggling to hire the skills they need.

Approximately a quarter of construction output is public sector and three-quarters is private sector. With a third of the European workforce leaving the sector due to Brexit, building firms and other employers could leave themselves vulnerable to severe labour shortages – unless they plan ahead.
